Let’s Stay Apart, and Beat it Together…

I am Sarah Jafri, and I am an ER Doctor in Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Institute of Trauma Centre (SMBBIT). I come from a family of 3 members including me, my husband, and my two-year-old daughter. My husband, Shoaib Tahir is an orthopedic surgeon in 50 bedded hospital in Gadap City which is currently an isolation center for the patients suffering from COVID-19.

COVID-19 is a deadly virus that has outspread worldwide and has led to the deaths of many individuals. As I am a doctor, I have to get to work every day, risking my life and the future of my family. Lives are at stake and as a mother who is a doctor, it is indeed a challenge for me to tackle and win this war against the virus. Every day while I’m on my way back home the fear of being a transmitter of this life-threatening disease in my family circles my mind, yet I have to get rid of this thought. The hospital in which my husband is working has been changed into an isolation center. He is on the frontline and is treating patients who are suffering from coronavirus and it too is a constant threat to him and my family. It takes a lot of effort to keep my family safe and healthy and I have to take a lot of precautionary measures. Wearing the PPE, especially in this hot weather is very tiring. Putting on the N-95 mask, to prevent the virus from entering your nose, makes you suffocate that eventually leads to a headache. It is hectic to perform all the precautionary measures and cover yourself in multiple layers of clothing, however, it is necessary.

There are many myths and misinformation among people regarding the coronavirus. There are people who tend to believe in homemade remedies and medicament and often argue related to some precautions and medical care.

Every day, I wake up to go to work and save the lives of people. One thing that motivates me the most is my family. I want to defeat this virus and win this war against it in order to rid this world of it.

A message that I’ll like to deliver to the citizens is to kindly stay at home and respect the lockdown as this is the only way we can beat the virus and if it’s necessary, it’s a humble request to all to wear masks and gloves.

To conclude, we all can defeat coronavirus together, so let’s stay apart and beat it. And remember, THIS TOO SHALL PASS!
